"...Frequently, prospective adoptive parents hesitate to adopt children, they've fallen in love with, once they receive his/her medical reports...On the video, they see a perfect child, but the medical report suggests that the child is so unhealthy that he/she should be hospitalized. Why are Russian and Kazakhstan medical reports the way they are? Sometimes diagnoses are exaggerated because only unhealthy children are eligible for international adoptions. Often times it is a way for the orphanage to increase their funding. However in most cases physicians believe what they are writing. Psychology of doctors in Russia or Kazakhstan is much different from US doctors. The average American doctor will assume the child is fine unless there are obvious physical signs and will perform several tests before diagnoses,( unless it is just a common cold). Russian doctors diagnose the child before the testing. In the first years of their lives, children are examined on a regular basis. Instead of chart of development, children are given a number of diagnoses... Here some of the diagnoses that could sound scary but in fact the child will be considering being healthy by US doctors. Parinatal encephalopathy. These diagnoses refer to pyramidal syndrome, pyramidal insufficiency, vegetative destonia, syndrom of motion disorder, and parinatal insult of the CNS, natal trauma and other neurological problems. In most orphanages the frequency of this diagnosis is high enough to make it meaningless (95% or so). Parinatal encephalopathy does not correspond with western diagnosis of cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a serious diagnosis that will be clearly stated on the child's medical. Parinatal encephalopathy is often given to newborn kids as a result of observation of their weak muscle tonus or irritability. Usually massage and simple exercises are recommended for kids with that condition. Hip displasia This diagnosis appears unreasonably frequently in Russian medical reports. This indicates a problem or suspected problem with a hip joint. It potentially refers to western term "congenital hip dislocation" Usually no x-ray or other tests performed to support this diagnosis.
